Model trains are one of the most interesting and entertaining hobbies there are. As with any modeling hobby, it requires a great attention to detail, a lot of assembling, and a love for the machines that it represents.

In the case of model trains, a fan of the hobby might also enlarge his or her interest in designing and preparing a landscape for his or her train to travel through. This part of the hobby requires a lot of planning and work, but it’s also one of the most rewarding aspects of model trains. Specially when other people are amazed at the little city that you created in the back of your house.

Model trains aren’t for just anyone, and we, lovers of the hobby, are ok with that fact. We’d rather have less people with real interest in the hobby, than lots of people doing half-jobs at it.

First of all, if you don’t love trains, real trains, then perhaps this hobby is not for you.

Let’s take an example with a more common machine: cars. Some people love cars and know their specifications by hearth. If you ask them why such model is better over another, you might expect at least 10 minutes of talk about technical specification, style, aerodynamics, history of the manufacturer and interior decorations. On the other hand, some people couldn’t care less about the car they drove as long as it’s cheap and gets them where they want.

It’s similar with model trains. Some people like trains because of their power or style. Others can tell the difference between an electric train, a diesel train and a steam engine train. Yet others can tell you why the Santa Fe model has more power but is less classic than the New York Central model. If you like real trains, even if you don’t know much about them, then you’ll probably like model trains. If you have a favorite train and you have memorized its code name and specifications, then you’ll love model trains.

Model trains are all about detail, detail, detail. Whether it’s a small horn on the top of the locomotive, or getting the right colors for the train logo, having a love for detail and reproduction of a real train is something essential for this hobby.

Some model trains come already pre-assembled, with little effort needed to set the tracks and the train. However, most lovers of the hobby enjoy the handcraft that comes with assembling and painting the train yourself. And don’t get me started on building a setting on your garden for your model train.

However, don’t let any of these comments discourage you from taking up model railroading. A hobby is meant to be fun and entertaining, and if you feel that model trains are something that attract your attention, then you should give it a try, regardless of what other people say.
