Trains Layouts
This is by far the most important step
Model trains layouts are a hobby that is not just for anyone. As with anything that requires work, it’s for the dedicated and the committed to model trains. Although some people prefer a simple layout, the fun really comes when time is taken for planning every little detail and then taking all the trouble to install it and make the vision come a small forest, city or desert on the yard of your house.
The first thing that one should do when it comes to model train layouts is planning. This is by far the most important step and every step that comes after must go according what was planned.
Vision plays an important part in the planning of model trains layouts. Look at the place were you plan the layout to be. What do you see? Is it a desert where cowboys get out of the train to go rest at a saloon after surviving an Indian attack? Is it a forest where lumberjacks sing as they load the fresh cut timber on the train cars? Or is it a small city, where trains have a modern look and they take people to their jobs? Model train layouts have many different scenarios from which you can choose the one you like best.
After the vision is set, you have to work with your terrain. Indoor model train layouts usually are even, but if you want a garden or outdoors train, you might need to work on the terrain. You might decide to leave some small hills and transform them into mountains, or if you really want a challenge, make a tunnel for your train to go through. The result is more than worth the extra work involved. Nevertheless, not everything can be a tunnel or a mountain, so you may have to smooth part of the terrain to lay tracks.
Gardening and plants have to be taken into account for model trains layouts. It’s better to work with what you have already. However, for extra effect, you may want to plant smaller bushes or plants that enhance the look. The opposite is also true. A picture of a train next to a 20 foot tall rose won’t look very realistic, will it? So you might want to get rid or relocate plants that break the illusion.
Finally, another consideration to take into account when planning model train layouts is budget. Model trains layouts aren’t exactly cheap. Really good model train layouts can be expensive. There is some work involved, so you might want to take that into account as well.
If you don’t want to spend too much or don’t have much time, then maybe simple, indoor model train layouts are better for you. However, for those of you with a passion for model trains, that time and money will be more than worth it when you make your train run through your layout for the first time or when your friends are impressed by the result of your work.
